Permanent eyeliner

Also known as an eyeliner tattoo, permanent eyeliner is a treatment you can receive that replaces the need to wear eyeliner each day. Permanent eyeliner involves using a tattooing technique to apply ink along the lashline to create the appearance of eyeliner. Eyeliner tattoos can be applied in a variety of styles, from extremely thin and natural-looking liner, to thicker lines, and even winged eyeliner. Eyeliner Tattoo are semi-permanent, which means that they will start fading after some time. Other touch-ups are there to prolong the duration of your Eyeliner. They are not obligatory – it is up to you whether you will book more appointments to refresh your brows.

Jennifer Are you certified and licensed to operate?

Yes! Jennifique Lashes Brows & Beauty is a licensed tattoo studio and Jennifer is a Certified Permanent Makeup Artist (PMU). She has received a hands-on apprenticeship and received certification from one or more Permanent Makeup Artists.

Jennifer has also received extensive training and certification in Blood Borne Pathogens as deemed necessary for tattoo artists by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It’s crucial that you choose not only a Certified Permanent Makeup Artist (PMU) but also a Licensed and Insured one to ensure your health is protected!

What is permanent Eyeliner?

Eyeliner can be applied in many styles and colors, from soft, natural-looking lash enhancement to a defined line–the choice is yours! Some people feel both upper and lower eyeliner suits their needs best, while others feel only an upper or a lower eyeliner is appropriate for them. Whatever look you choose, you will wake up, shower, exercise, work, swim, and go to bed always looking your best. No more tattle tale eyeliner smear or smudge during the day, no more concern when participating in sports activities and best of all, your appearance remains consistently fresh throughout the day and night

Does IT HURT?

In a word, maybe.  But not that much.  Numbing cream and gel are used liberally throughout the procedure and it’s more discomfort than pain. Please take a few Tylenol 30 minutes before procedure.

How long does it last?

Everyone’s skin is different so it greatly depends on your skin composition and your healing process. No guarantee can be made that a specific client will benefit the same as another from this procedure. Eyeliner is implanting pigment into the basal layer of the epidermis; it is a form of cosmetic tattooing, using fine, delicate passes.  Other factors that play a role in longevity are skin color, the pigment used, thickness of the lines, and how aggressive your immune system is in metabolizing the pigment.  Factors such as sun exposure, BOTOX, AHA’s (lactic, glycolic, citric, retinoic and tartaric acids) or any OTC creams and lotions for tone correcting, anti-aging, exfoliating, or lightening the skin can cause your eyeliner to fade.

How long does it take?

Your Eyeliner is broken up into two appointments – the first appointment and then 4 to 6 weeks later, a perfecting session.
First Treatment: Please allow up to 1 hour for your first eyeliner appointment to be completed. When you arrive to your appointment Jennifer will take a before picture and will chat about your desired look, color and shape.  Most of the appointment time is spent waiting for numbing to take effect (this is a Lignocaine & Tetracaine based product.) During the numbing process (approximately 20 minutes) you will have time to relax. The tattooing itself is quite quick. Your skin may be a little tender to start with, but once the process is underway, Jennifer will use a different type of numbing gel which will be very effective as it penetrates the open skin, alleviating the discomfort for most clients thereafter.

Once finished with the tattooing, you’ll discuss aftercare, and take some photos to compare your pre and post procedure.

Jennifer will see you in 4-6 weeks for your perfecting session.  The time between appointments gives the skin time to heal and lets the color settle.   The second appointment will not take as long.  Jennifer will see how your skin has held the pigment and can make any adjustments to color or shape as needed. But really this appointment is exactly as described- it’s all about the perfecting of your new eyeliner.

How long is the Healing Process?

Healing usually takes about a week. However, please allow a few days if you have an event or special occasion coming up. Jennifer tells clients not to micro-analyze their eyeliner until 30 days that’s when you will know your completely healed pigment.  Your new permanent eyeliner will go through several phases during the healing cycle.  The pigment will appear very sharp and dark immediately after the procedure. This is because the pigment is still sitting on top of your skin, and has not yet settled in completely. The color of the pigment will soften gradually, and you may see some pigment on your towel after washing your face, or on your pillowcase – do not be alarmed.  Once the healing of the skin starts taking place, the eyeliner will look like dry skin. This might give you the impression that the color pigment is fading too quickly; however, this is just superficial color and dry cells being naturally removed from your skin. After a couple of days this will subside. Don’t pick or scratch. It is highly recommended to wear sunglasses when exposed to the sun, as sun exposure might cause the color pigment to fade away more quickly.

It’s important to follow all aftercare instructions and to attend the required follow-up appointment to make the finishing touches to your new brows!
Your healing is only about 50% in our control. Once you leave it’s up to you to be diligent about following the instructions you’re given to get the best result! And no matter how great they look, it’s important to come for your touch up appointment to get the final result. This is a two-step process, so even if you have something you want to tweak after the first appointment No Worries! We will continue to work on your brows at the touch-up appointment.

How will I choose a color?

Jennifer recommends black if you wear black eyeliner everyday, as black can be stark and bold. Other popular softer colors are tones of brown, smoke, and green. Other complimenting fun colors are navy blue, bright blue, purple and teal. You name it she can do it.

What about my after treatment?

Aftercare will be discussed at your appointment, and you will leave with a complementary post-op bag with instructions and everything you need. Although you will not need to take time off from work, you should keep your recovery period and after care in mind when scheduling your procedure appointments around work, social, or travel plans.

Are there some clients who cant retain pigment?

Yes, this does happen. Some people have highly effective immune systems that reject the pigment, and some just have highly affect skin healing. It’s very rare, but it’s important that all clients understand this is a possibility and in most cases, there is no way for us to know if this will take place prior to the work being done. Occasionally, we will recommend a third appointment to further touch the brows up if the client is retaining some pigment after the first touch up, however, anything beyond that would likely be too much for the skin and the client would likely not be a candidate for further permanent makeup.

Eyeliner healing process

What are the Stages of the Eyeliner Healing Process? Usually, there are 6 stages of the eyeliner process, and some of them may be very annoying.

Stage 1 – dark and swollen freshly done eyeliner

Stage 2 – scabbing

Stage 3 – light and patchy eyelid(s)

Stage 4 – the color returns

Stage 5 – touch up

Stage 6 – full recovery

You will most likely go through all of them, but some might not be as intense, while others can be worrying. Inform yourself what is normal and what is not and contact your artist if something does not look common and worries you too much.

Days 1-2
The powder brows treatment is fresh, which means that your brows will probably be red and swollen. Also, they look like a block of color and the pigment is too dark. What you need to do is to calm down and stop checking them every five minutes. Also, you mustn’t touch them or wash them. If advised by your esthetician, just blot your eyeliner with a clean, dry cloth.

Days 3-4
The color will fade a little bit, but it is still far from the final look. Your eyelids have just started to heal. If the redness is still present and intense and your brows are itchy, ask your artist to check if this is usual.

Days 5-7
The annoying scabbing stage starts. Some people’s powder brows will scab more than others, which is normal because everybody heals differently. Some itchiness is also normal but you are not allowed to scratch your brows. You might ruin the treatment. Powder brows usually scab in one big or a few big pieces.
Some scabbing is normal, but if you experience extensive scabbing, contact your powder brows artist immediately.

Days 8-10
The scabbing stage is done and your eyelids might look patchy and too light. Don’t freak out and think that your powder brows disappeared! They appear too light because your skin forms new layers over the pigment. The color will come back and the touch up will fix up the patches.

Days 11-28
The hardest period is behind you and now you can be more relaxed even though your eyelids haven’t taken their final shape yet. You can start wearing makeup and go back to your everyday routine. Still, try not to sweat too much and spend too much time in the sun.

Days 28-42
Your brows are completely healed. They will probably look great much earlier, right after the first touch up. The first touch up is mandatory and you should not skip it. Its purpose is to fix all the irregularities and change what you are unsatisfied with.

eyeliner AFTERCARE

It usually takes around 7-10 days for the skin to heal, however, you should follow the aftercare until the skin is fully healed. Your skin is healed when all flaking and scabbing is gone.

DAY OF TREATMENT: ABSORB

With medium pressure, blot the area with a clean tissue to absorb excess lymph fluid. Do this every five minutes until oozing has stopped, however long that takes. Removing this fluid prevents the hardening of lymph, thus helping to prevent scabbing. Blot, blot, blot!

DAY 2-10 (until the scabbing stops): CLEANSE & MOISTURIZE

Gently rinse your eyelids each morning and night with water and gentle soap (ex. Dial, baby shampoo, Dove, Cetaphil.) With a very light touch, use your clean fingertips to gently cleanse brows. Rub the area in a smooth motion for 5-10 seconds and rinse with water ensuring that all soap is removed. To dry, gently pat with a clean tissue or let air dry. DO NOT use any cleansing products containing acids (glycolic, lactic, or AHA), or any exfoliates.

Healing with little to no aftercare ointment is best! You should only apply Aquaphor if you are extremely itchy and uncomfortable. If so, you you can apply a rice grain amount of aqua for with a cotton swab and spread it over affected area as needed. Be sure not to over apply as this will suffocate skin and delay healing. The ointment should be barely noticeable on the skin. Never put ointment on wet or damp tattoo.

Do not rub or pick at your brows. This can cause scarring or infection. Should there be any scabbing, let them fall off naturally.
